Tournament of Stars – Bayonne NJ (June 30th)

Just before 2:00 a.m. on Friday morning the Alumni Band loaded up and left Cambridge on its way to Bayonne NJ to perform its field show as one of the 10 corps on the field in the Bayonne Bridgemen-sponsored 2009 edition of “Tournament of Stars”.  The midday arrival at the Carteret Holidy Inn made it ideal for many to lounge by the pool for the afternoon.

With practice scheduled for Saturday morning, “the Ladies” arranged for a shuttle to shuffle off to NYC for the hop on / hop-off bus tour of the Big Apple.  Practice for the Band was productive as the fine tuning of the field show continued.

As the evening approached, the overhead skies looked threatening.  Thoughts of the downpour and the lightning of 2008 were recalled by many.  The question “fuzzyhats?” was repeated many times over.  As it turned out, rain was not a factor.

Some traffic issues delayed the Alumni Band’s arrival at the Don Ahern – Veterans’ Memorial Stadiumbut the busses arrived in time for the Silver Leaves Ensemble to get down to the field to play Canada’s National anthem to open the Show.

Due to the slickness of certain parts of the field from the early afternoon rain, nearly all of the performing corps chose to “Park & Play” (standstill concert).

No so for the Scout House Alumni Band.  Under the direction of Drum Majors Gary Tones (announced as “toe nez”) and Larry Blundell the Band lined up across the sideline in step off formation.

The Band performed its full show with no mishaps due to the field condititons, in front of a pro-Bridgemen, appreciative crowd.

The finale of the show had band members from all the participating corps assemble on the field for the playing of a specially written version of “Taps” as a memorial tribute to deceased corps members who in earlier days had marched in so many different corps.  It was an impressive ending to the Show.

The bus ride home on Sunday was uneventful.  The movie “Mall Cop” was a hit on both busses.

Next US trip – Independence Day in Warren PA, July 4th.
